Autumn Term - Week 3

Year 6 Whitby Residential 2026 – A Fantastic Adventure!

Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic four-day residential visit to the beautiful seaside town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. It was an action-packed adventure filled with exciting activities, new experiences, plenty of walking and lots of opportunities to develop independence, resilience and teamwork.

Staying at YHA Whitby, right next to the historic Whitby Abbey, provided the perfect base for exploring the town and discovering its fascinating history, geography and coastal environment.

Exploring Whitby and the Famous 199 Steps

Our adventure began with a journey to Whitby, where the children were excited to explore their new surroundings. One of our first challenges was climbing the famous 199 Steps, which lead from the harbour up towards St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey.

We explored the historic churchyard and enjoyed spectacular views across the town, harbour and coastline. The children were fascinated by the history of the area and its connections to Bram Stoker’s famous novel Dracula.

During our stay, we also enjoyed an evening ghost walk, discovering some of Whitby’s spooky stories, legends and fascinating history!

A Coastal Adventure to Sandsend

One of the highlights of our residential was our walk along the coastline to the picturesque village of Sandsend.

The children demonstrated fantastic determination and resilience as we explored the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline. Along the way, we observed the coastal landscape, discussed the impact of erosion and explored the different natural features that make this part of the country so special.

We also spent time on the beach, enjoying the fresh sea air, exploring the rock pools, searching for interesting stones and fossils, and taking in the stunning scenery.

It was certainly a day to remember, with some children walking an incredible 25,000 steps!

Discovering Whitby’s Maritime History

Our residential also provided some brilliant opportunities to learn about Whitby’s rich maritime heritage.

We visited the Whitby Lifeboat Museum, where the children discovered the history of the RNLI and learned about the bravery of lifeboat crews who have rescued people along the coastline for generations.

We also visited the Whitby Lifeboat Station, where we were able to see the lifeboats and learn more about the important work carried out by the RNLI today. The children were particularly interested in the different types of lifeboats and how they are used to keep people safe at sea.

Another fascinating stop was Whitby Museum, where we explored a range of exhibits linked to the town’s history, including fossils, local wildlife, maritime history and the people who have helped shape Whitby over the years.

Exploring Whitby Town

Of course, no trip to Whitby would be complete without some time exploring the town itself!

The children enjoyed visiting the local shops, choosing souvenirs and spending some of their pocket money. We also made time for a visit to the traditional seaside arcades, which proved to be a popular activity!

Throughout these experiences, pupils demonstrated growing independence as they managed their money, made decisions and explored the town safely with their groups.

Visiting Whitby Abbey

On our final day, we visited the magnificent Whitby Abbey, one of the most famous landmarks on the Yorkshire coast.

The children explored the impressive ruins and discovered more about the abbey’s history and its importance over hundreds of years. We discussed what life might have been like for the people who lived and worked there and admired the incredible architecture that remains today.

The visit also provided a fantastic opportunity to make connections with our learning in history, geography and English.

More Than Just a Residential!

Although we visited some incredible places, our Whitby residential was about much more than sightseeing.

Throughout the four days, the children developed important life skills, including independence, responsibility, communication, teamwork and resilience. For some pupils, this was their first experience of staying away from home without their families, making their achievements even more special.

From organising their belongings and sharing rooms to supporting their friends, trying new experiences and tackling long walks, the children rose to every challenge.

We were incredibly proud of the positive attitudes, enthusiasm and determination shown by our Year 6 pupils throughout the visit.

Memories to Last a Lifetime!

Our Whitby residential was a wonderful experience, packed with laughter, learning, adventure and memories that we hope the children will treasure for years to come.

A huge well done to all the children for making the visit such a success. We would also like to thank the staff who accompanied the children and helped make the residential possible.

What a fantastic adventure, Year 6!
