End of Summer 1 Week 5 Message and Updates

What a lovely week we've had in Y5 this week. The children have been wonderful adapting to changes in the school day due to the Y6 SATs tests and their behaviour has been excellent.

Congratulations to our winners of special mentions awards this week: Archie, Summer, Tiana and Hunter.

In English this week, we have started a brand new genre - a setting description. The children have really enjoyed drawing their own images based on the description of the cathedral from our novel 'Floodlands' before getting stuck in to looking at what features we expect to see in setting descriptions.

In maths this week, we have enjoyed looking at adding and subtracting decimal numbers - the children have been very successful at this which has been lovely.

In guided reading this week, we have enjoyed getting further into our novel 'Floodlands'. Our answers to vocabulary and retrieval questions are improving and the detail some children are now adding to their answers to inference questions is extremely impressive - they are learning what is needed to collect marks in longer questions.

In computing this week, we had an absolute blast using the micro:bits in order to create countdown timers in order to help Mr Mac with getting his boys to follow instructions at home.

In P.E. this week, our lessons were a little more challenging given the weather but we still managed to enjoy another cricket lesson.

In history this week, we compared the Shang Dynasty with other civilisations around at the same time - Ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley. The children found it interesting that all the civilisations relied so heavily on rivers.

In languages this week, we continued our unit of work on clothing.

In art this week, we started finished our own piece of work using a style similar to Monet and our school field as our landscape.

We had a special visit from PC Paul and a couple of his colleagues to discuss water safety with the children ahead of what we hope will be a lovely summer.

Next week we have our trip to Magna and Rotherham United's New York Stadium on Tuesday. Please remember that your child will need a packed lunch, a water bottle and a coat - inside Magna is still quite cold even if the temperature outside is warmer.
