End of Spring 1 Week 1 Messages and Updates

What a fantastic start to the new year we have had this week in year 5. We have been mastering multiplication, publishing our non-chronological reports, starting new topics in history, art, computing, science, Spanish and P.E. and we even survived our first snowfall of 2026!

The children have settled really quickly back into routines and started making progress in their work as we build towards our next assessment week before Easter.

Key Messages:

Reading - please take time to log your home reading on boom reader.

P.E. kits - please send the children with their kits on a Monday for them to bring home on a Friday. The kits should consist of black shorts, a white t-shirt and trainers (crocs and shoes are not appropriate). If we are able, we will be doing outdoor P.E. lessons once a week too - for these, jogging bottoms/trackies and a hoody are perfect - clothing which is warm and allows movement.

Jewellery - there were a few children who started to appear in different pieces of jewellery before Christmas, which we asked them to remove. Children are allowed to wear small, stud earrings and watches. We shouldn't see any chains/bracelets or hooped earrings. We would also ask that children are not wearing false nails as this hampers their pencil grip and they find recording their work trickier.

Snacks - fruit, yogurts, cereal bars or a small amount of money for the tuck shop are the only snacks the children should be bringing. Please avoid sending them with crisps, biscuits or chocolate bars as they will not be allowed to have them as snacks during breaktime.

Things to look forward to next week:

English - the children will be working on their understanding of what makes a good narrative before planning their own stories.

Maths - next week will focus on the formal method of division.

Science - we will continue our study of the solar system.

History - we are continuing our new unit which looks at the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Normans and how they shaped our country as we know it.

Computing - we are going to start a new unit all about producing videos.

PSHE - we are going to continue looking at our dreams and goals for the future.

Spanish - we will be continuing our new unit all about 'the date'
