Year 6 - Miss Bruce (Challengers) and Miss Brown (Voyagers)

Year 6 Autumn Term 2020

Welcome to Year 6!  Our team consists of Miss Bruce, Miss Brown, Mrs Bourke, Mrs Eddison, Mr Mason and Miss Rooney.

During the autumn term, we will be looking at a significant event in modern history – World War II. We will be focusing on what life was like for a child who was evacuated during this period and how the war would have affected the way they lived and functioned day to day. The children will research and step into the role of an evacuee and draw comparisons between life then and how it is today.

As part of our English lessons and our novel study learning journey, we will be accompanying William on his journey as an evacuee during WWII in the book Goodnight Mr Tom – written by Michelle Magorian. Each child will be able to develop a deepened understanding of the characters – particularly William and Mr Tom- through a number of immersive experiences. Within lessons, we will use all of our learning and experiences to create writing of different genres including narrative, discussion and recount.

In maths, we will be looking at place value and revising the four operations, applying our knowledge of the formal written method to solve a range of mathematical questions. Later in the term, we will be moving onto fractions and geometry. Multiplication tables are a key mathematical skill and as always, we will be practising our times tables in school and encouraging the children to engage in additional practise at home (using tt rockstars) as this will really help strengthen their learning.

In year 6, we have a big focus on independence and personal organisation. We ask that the children are prepared for school and bring the necessary equipment every day. The children will need the following:

  • PE Kit – this needs to be in school every day (Y6 allocated days are Tuesday and Thursday)

  • Children need to be heard read at home 5 times a week with a record being made in their home planners

  • Children need to practise their times tables up to 12 x 12 every week

  • Homework needs to be completed to a high standard and given in on time. Their book will go out on a Thursday and should be returned by Tuesday.

  • Spelling log books need to be brought into school every day and children should be practising their documented spellings every day.

  • A labelled water bottle needs to be in school every day.

Please follow the Y6 teachers and the school on twitter @rosehilljuniors, @RRJMissBruce and @RRJMissBrown to keep up to date with what we are up to in lessons and to celebrate the children’s achievements with us.
