4M and 4H welcome you to Year 4!

Home of 4H (Miss Holmes's class) and 4M (Mr MacDonald’s class)

Thank you for visiting the Year 4 section of our school website. Here you will find lots of useful information about what your child will be learning this term. Why not follow @RRJMrMacDonald on Twitter to see regular updates, photographs and examples of work.

Expectations for the school year:

  • P.E. kit is in school every day. Children are to bring their kit on a Monday morning and take it home on a Friday.

  • The children read at home every night.

  • Homework (given out on a Friday) will be in by Wednesday morning at the latest.

  • Children should have their water bottle and indoor shoes in school every day.

    Autumn Topic: Going Underground

Children develop a wider knowledge of our local area, thinking about what has shaped the landscape of Rawmarsh, Rotherham and the country as a whole. They will analyse and evaluate what impact the coal mining and steel industries had on Rawmarsh and our local area, by investigating a range of primary and secondary sources of information. We will be exploring the geography and key historical events which have shaped Rawmarsh and children will explore what life would have been like in Rawmarsh over the last century and how this has changed. They will experience first-hand what life and work was like for a miner during a visit to the National Coal Mining Museum and go on an underground tour of a mine.

We will be visiting the National Coal Mining Museum as part of their topic work. Y4 will also be taking part in their first Rosehill residential visit – an exciting outing to Castleton where we will visit Speedwell Cavern and stay at the local Youth Hostel.

    Novel Study:

We will study two books this term: The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan and Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. Through novel study children will begin to look at the wider picture – what has the author told us? What have they left us to infer? What clues are in the illustrations? This will be developed through all aspects of English with immersive activities being supported by thoroughly stimulating learning environments aimed at prompting questions and discussions about the texts.

Our main topics for the Autumn term will be place value, addition and subtraction.

As you know, children have to know all of their multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4, so in this term, we will be focusing on all children knowing their 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables. We will also we working on telling the time and using money, so extra practise at home would be appreciated.

Don't hesitate to pop in to school and see us - our doors are always open!
