This autumn term we will be travelling back in time to discover what life was like in World War II. During this war, life in Britain changed dramatically and we will be finding out why the war began, which countries were involved and how life changed on the home front. In English, we will be studying the novel ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by Michelle Magorian and throughout the novel study, we will taking part in a range of immersive activities which will help us to develop a deeper understanding about the life of the evacuee William Beech. Within lessons, we will use all of our learning and experiences to create writing of different genres: narrative, discussion and recount.
In maths, we will be developing and deepening our understanding of place value before moving on to completing calculations and problems involving the four operations. We will be using formal written methods to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers then will complete decimal and fraction problems involving these operations. Furthermore, as ever, we will be practising our times tables as knowing these is important for all areas of maths – lots of practise at home using ttrockstars will really help with this.
In science we will be focusing on light. We will be thinking about how light moves and learning how light helps us to see. In our science lessons, we will be continuing to develop our investigative skills and think about what makes a fair test.
In Year 6, we have a big focus on personal organisation and independence. The children should ensure that they are organised for every school day:
* P.E. Kit needs to be in school every day.
* They need to read at home regularly.
* They need to practise their timestables up to 12 x 12.
* homework needs to be completed to a high standard and given in on time. Homework will be given out on a Thursday and should be returned by Tuesday.
* A water bottle and indoor shoes need to be in school every day.
