Welcome to the home of Year 5!
This term we will be studying Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling. During our novel study, we will be reading through the text and be involved in a range of immersive activities to support our learning. We will use all that we have learned about the story and the characters to support us in different types of writing – including diaries, continuing a narrative and studying how characters have developed. This will conclude with a trip to Warner Brother Studios towards the end of the Spring term.
In maths during the Spring term, we will be exploring fractions, including ordering, comparing, simplifying and finding equivalents. We will be using our knowledge of mathematical language to support our work with word problems. Towards the end of the term we will recap our understanding of multiplication and division processes. As ever, we will be practising our times tables – lots of practise at home will really help in all areas of maths.
In science we will begin by focussing on forces. We will be understanding how air resistance and friction effect gravity. We will be conducting our own investigations, understanding how we can keep them fair, make improvements and draw scientific conclusions. In R.E. we will be focussing on Islam, their practises and how it differs to Christianity. During geography we will be focussing on Britain and its counties and cities, concluding with an investigation into Rawmarsh and its human and physical traits.
In year 5, we have a focus on personal organisation. The children should ensure:
P.E. kit is in school every day. Children are to bring their kit on a Monday morning and take it home on a Friday. Our usual PE days are Monday and Thursday but kit should be in school every day just in case.
They are reading at home regularly – they should be reading most days.
They are practising and learning their multiplication tables up to 12x12.
Homework is completed to a high standard and given in on time. Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned by Wednesday.
They have their water bottle and indoor shoes in school every day.
